Senkumar

The Sony’s were gifted with a baby boy on 7th July 1995, whom they named Senkumar. It was a normal delivery and there were no risk factors at antenatal period, except that the mother was too young for delivery. During early stages, the parents noticed a delay in the normal developmental milestones like rolling over, head control etc. Doctor’s confirmed that the baby had problems in normal development and diagnosed it as a case of Cerebral Palsy – Spastic Diplegia. As per doctor’s advice Physiotherapy and Ayurvedic treatment were provided for Senkumar, until 3 years of age. He showed good progress in his development as he could crawl/creep, sit and stand with support at the age of 3. He has no problem with speech.
Senkumar joined adarsh at 3 yrs. During the next 5 year period, Senkumar had tremendous changes in his motor control as well as socialization skills. A proper schedule for physiotherapy was devised and given to him accordingly. His hand functions improved markedly during his training at adarsh. He also had severe behavior problems in the early periods, like tantrums, destructive behavior, which was brought under control. At the age of 6, Senkumar underwent surgery, for reducing the spasticity in his muscles. After that he has started walking independently..

Senkumar left adarsh at 8 yrs and was admitted to GLP School, Nadakkavu, as a student of the 1st Std. He has mild mental retardation also. As a result, he cannot grasp all that a normal child can, from the class. He is not happy with the school atmosphere and in his school there are no adequate resources for a child with challenges. He does not have an interest in studies and instead of that he likes music and he sings well. He likes cinema and Mohanlal is his favorite actor.

Here the primary fact revealed is that a child like Senkumar who has an intellectual problem is not a suitable candidate for Inclusive Education in a school which lacks special resources for such children. Hence, he needs special training emphasizing his social and vocational skills.
