EDUSAT-Satellite Education Programme at Adarsh

M/s Media Lab Asia, a Society under the Department of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, appointed C-DAC, Trivandrum as the implementing agency of the project "Setting up of ICT based Distance training facility using EDUSAT" for Special Educators and other Rehabilitation Professionals with the help of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), in eight special Schools in Kerala. The objective of the project is to provide a scalable pilot infrastructure facility for imparting distance training for trainers in the field of special education. The teaching end facility as well as the facilities at these eight schools of special education will be set up and managed as part of the project, and will be done under the close supervision of C-DAC. In the arrangement set up, communicationexisting  between experts in the Special Education and trainees by two-way Audio-Visual mode. The teaching end has been  set up at the space allotted by the KVM College of Special Education, Chertala , Alappuzha Dt., Kerala.
Adarsh is one among the eight schools selected for the programme. We consider this as a major development, as, through this , the knowledge available in different special schools about teaching skills is  being  shared on a continuous basis among special schools and each special schools gains thereby.9 Classes are being conducted every month, 1 for mothers and the other 8  for teachers and students of special education courses. Our teachers and therapists are regularly  taking classes at these programmes.

BIO GAS PLANT
Currently the premises of Adarsh Charitable Trust at Kureekad accommodate more than 180 children, 30-35 staff and also 90-100 mothers and care takers of the children. So, all together over 250 people spend their daytime at Adarsh. Since the number of "occupants of Adarsh" has grown to this level, difficulty was being faced in managing the disposal of waste, especially of food and kitchen waste (Kerala Govt provides noon meals for our children and that is cooked in our kitchen. There is also a canteen for the benefit of staff and visitors.) . So, a biogas plant of capacity 1 m3 has been working from June 2007 with the twin objectives of  proper management of food and kitchen waste which will also ensure clear pollution free surroundings and production of biogas from Kitchen Waste.

COMPUTER LAB
As explained elsewhere,we are extending our services to more than 180  children with cerebral palsy and autism. In the case of many children affected with CP, their physical disability is so high that they are unable to attend or to pursue the usual independent activities. But studies all over the world have shown that with the help of external aids, especially IT related, programmes are available which can offer many user friendly activities to persons with various disabilities like vision impairment, orthopedic disability etc. Even at a later stage many can even pursue a vocation of their own in computer related areas like animation, graphics, job works etc. User-friendly software and hardware are available which can be put into use to attain the above objectives. To enable our children to acquire the necessary skills in computer operation, a computer lab was set up  in Februaly 2008, with the help of TCS who  donated,5 computers , some of them modified  to suit our children's requirements.
VOCATIONAL PROJECTS
PAPER BAG MAKING UNIT
Adarsh started a vocational bag-making unit on 7th of October 2006. The unit is primarily for the parents or caregivers of the children as well as community members, which  provides  them with a source of livelihood. It will also include those children who are independently capable of assisting/ executing some task. We have learned from experience that such disabled children can lead an independent life in adult hood, provided they get some vocational skill. However, as sufficient number of children and parents has not been found to make the unit viable, for some time, the unit was being managed by outsiders, some of them hearing impaired. Now, this unit trains some children in making paper bags.

SCHOOL BAG MAKING UNIT
Anpther major venture of the  vocational rehabilitation project, involving the parents /care givers of the children as well as community members, was a school Bag making Unitwith 8 modified machines for stitching school bags . The intention was also to include, apart from mothers,  those children who are independently capable of assisting/ executing some tasks. The  unit, which was started in October 2006, was expected to address the needs of such children and parents. But unfortunately, we could not work the unit properly, putting the machines to optimum use Therfore, now ,for the last one year, the machines are on lease to an NGO/Association School bag making unit.  is also run  in conjunction with Women’s Welfare Association, of Infant Jesus Church , Kandanadwho have taken these machines on hire. At present participation by children or their parents in this venture is negligible but it is our intention that in the near future, some of our children will be able to learn the operation of the machines and participate in the school bag making process. The machines were donated by Masonic Lodge , Ernakulam.
Unfortunately, the agreement with Infant Jesus Church also was terminated  w.e.f 01/12/2009 as they found it difficult to run the unit. Now we plan to set up a small tailoring unit with some mothers and children who have good fine motor control
