Vocational training
Though the children admitted for rehabilitation are to be sent away at the age of 12, we are not able to do so as we are aware that they have nowhere else to go and to sustain or improve on the advance they have made in their condition. Additionally, with the introduction of academic education under the NIOS (National Open School Scheme) in Adarsh, the upper age limit has become irrelevant for such children. As it is, we have around 20 children over 15 years who are attending classes under NIOS. Out of these, 6 have appeared for the Board examination for the 10th standard the academic year 2010-11 and 2011-12. Adarsh is the only accredited agency for conducting such examinations (among special schools). Over 100 children from this centre as well as from other centres attend examination under A, B and C level examinations every year. After their Secondary Level examination, many of them would like to learn a trade which can help them to earn a living and lead of life of DIGNITY AND INDEPENDENCE as adults. For this purpose, we have set up a chapati and candle making unit as part of our vocational unit. There is also a small pot painting section for the children. Children with the help of their parents and teachers make sandwitches, ornaments, agarbathies, dishwash, phenyl etc. The infrastructure and equipment required will all require considerable additional space and therefore we started a separate vocational unit, functioning at a rented building close to the present premises of Adarsh Rehabilitation Centre in Kureekad, Chottanikkara , Ernakulam Dt. After watching the success of the experiment for some time and making sure of its success and usefulness to the children, a decision will be taken on its continuance. We have no doubt about its success, judging by the condition of the children and the conditions in Kochi and nearby areas where the above mentioned items have great demand. Initially, we are marketing chapati and candles to various schools and churches respectively on a regular basis depending on demand. other items we sale through exhibitions, and to parents and staffs of adarsh.

At present over 34( July 2017) children are undergoing training under vocational unit.
