NEWS LETTER
VOL-8; QE:MARCH 2010
As the quarter comes to an end, we bring you the 8th series of our electronic news letter. This has been a quarter of progress in many areas and a significant improvement in its services. The effort of each individual at “Adarsh” has tremendously helped us gain this progress. We continue to render our duties at Adarsh whole heartedly with valuable support from all of you. Here’s a view on the activities of Adarsh for the term January’10 to March’10.
BUILDING
As you all know, we relocated to our new building at Kureekad on 17th December 2005. Since then the number of students has risen. We had started experiencing shortage of space to accommodate students and for newer and more specialized activities of therapy in our new building almost as soon as we shifted to the present building. It was in this background that a project was formulated for providing additional rooms ipating all the requirements current and future, the plan was to provide 3 floors ,each floor of around 2000sq ft in continuation of the present building. The ground floor will accommodate additional rooms of various therapies , a kitchen, storeroom and dining space. A canteen is required as the number of occupants of Adarsh has increased to more than 250 including staff, mothers and care-takers .The construction work is going on and it is hoped that the ground floor will be ready before the centre re-opens after vacation in June.
TRAINING & THERAPY
Brain Mapping sessions are being done under the supervision of Dr.Neena Shilen,(Child Developmental Paediatrician) and Dr.Reji.Paul (Neurologist) at Sunrise Hospital,Kakkanad for autistic children who are undergoing music training to assess scienyifically the effect, if any of music training.
EDUCATION
Academic education under the Open school system of academic training is given for children who are not able to attend normal schools either due to severe disability, physical and mental and needs special attention. We have 10 dedicated special educators to provide special attention to these children with challenges. For the year 2009-2010, 6 children of Adarsh appeared at the 10th standard examination of the board.
PROGRAMMES
A Relook at and Rethink on our Therapy practices.
It had been felt for some time now that the therapy practices which we are adopting to facilitate the rehabilitation of children are not being critically examined and reviewed as often as they should be. We have highly qualified staff in various departments of therapy and Adarsh is as a rehabilitation centre in which the central place belongs to therapy. All therapists examined critically the practices now in vogue to satisfy ourselves whether they are appropriate to the requirements of each child. Such an examination automatically lead to corrective measures. Accordingly, this was adopted as the theme for the quarter.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
Our children took part in various cultural and sports competitions and won prizes and an over all championship for the neurologically challenged category at the sports meet organized by the Lions club at Angamaly.
As a part of the Coast Guard week celebration, our students were invited to be a part of the celebration. They visited the ship ”Samara” and performed various activities.
COMMUNITY BASED REHABILITATION
Based on the findings of detailed assessment of children attending nearly 200 Anganwadis and the nature of disability of the children,a Disability Screening Camp held on 14th March 2010 at Amabalamugal Medical Aid Society was the first step of a big project called “Disability Screening & Early Intervention”. The project is a joint venture of Adarsh Charitable Trust, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP). The project is being implemented by Adarsh Charitable Trust with financial help of BPCL and National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Ernakulam unit.
The camp was organized for challenged children from 4 selected Panchayats called Chottanikkara, Thiruvamkulam, Thiruvaniyoor and Vadavucode/Puthencruz. . The survey actually started in the last week of January. The success of the camp owes a lot to the efforts of Ms Oyena Chinnu Joy, Co-ordinator of Community Based Rehabilitation Project of Adarsh. 1.HOME BASED REHABILITATION
Home Based Rehabilitation Scheme introduced in November 08 is continuing for children whose financial and logistic conditions do not permit them to avail of even the services of special schools. We reach out to these children in the area and provide them with the necessary therapy and the proper guidance for attaining independence in life.
2. HIGH RISK BABY UNIT.
Generally, babies born prematurely or with very low birth weight, carry a high potential of risk of developmental delays and consequent complications. Modern medical science enables identification of such problems, if attended early to reduce considerably. Our developmental therapist works in two hospitals in Ernakulam,(Lakshmi Hospital and Ernakulam Medical Centre) in association with the neonatal units covering around an average of 50 children a month and following them up as required.
FRIENDS OF ADARSH
We were able to bring in more people specially youngsters into our Friends of Adarsh (FOA) forum. We formed a core committee and decided to meet once a month to make it perform the activities. The subsequent meetings of FOA were very productive, with the youngsters putting in various efforts to upgrade our website and to provide a new brouchure. They are also coming out with various new proposals for the benefit of our children in various kinds be it big or small.
