Akhil Babu, a case of Spastic Cerebral Palsy of Diplegic variety was born on 29/10/1992. Birth history showed that there was asphyxia at birth. The neonate was in ICU for two weeks.
In the neonatal period all the developmental milestones of the baby were delayed. Rolling from back to belly and vice versa, head control, crawling, creeping, and sitting etc. were delayed. Physiotherapy was started from 4th month onwards and is still continuing at home. With all this, the child showed signs of improvement as he started to sit and crawl independently. There was no bladder and bowel control in his early neonatal stages. Gradually he learned toilet control. From the beginning itself he had problems with learning. Also fine and gross motor functions of his hands were affected, specifically his right upper limb. His speech and language functions are intact.
As a part of rehabilitation, Akhil first admitted to Home of Faith, a special school for children with challenges. He joined adarsh after completing one year at the earlier school. Physically and academically Akhil improved a lot with special care at adarsh. During the course of his stay at adarsh, Akhil underwent spasticity control surgery. The surgery was successful and Akhil started to walk with the support of a crutch. Then he was transferred to a mainstream school.
Now, a 5th grader, he has started to cope up with the remaining children though academically he is not as good as most others in his class. Thanks to the tremendous support of his teachers and peers, he has adjusted very well to the school atmosphere. He likes music, sports (cricket, badminton) and cinema. He also sings fairly well. He also shows a strong vocational interest in carpentry. He goes to school and comes back by an auto-rickshaw, specially hired for this purpose. Overall, Inclusive education for Akhil Babu, has helped him extensively and the new experience has taught him a lot. He goes to school everyday, eager for his classes and happy at the thought of making new friends, thus opening up a whole new world of possibilities.
